Things to Do

Outdoor Adventures in Chatham County, North Carolina

Whether you visit for the day, stay overnight or live in Chatham County, you’ll find plenty of activities for all ages and all all types of interests. For instance, Jordan Lake near Chapel Hill covers approximately 14,000 acres.  There are nine recreation areas for family fun, including plenty of fishing, waterskiing, swimming and boating.

Golfers will enjoy driving ranges and courses at several places such as the Governor's Club Golf Course, The Preserve at Jordan Lake, and Twin Lakes Golf Course.  Chatham County's challenging courses are found in Pittsboro, Chapel Hill, and Siler City.

Nature lovers will enjoy the guided garden tours at Fearrington Village and the self-guided trails of the White Pines Nature Preserve where one can meander through several different forest types and view many wildflowers and plants, as well as enjoy the beautiful river vistas.

The Lower Haw River State Natural Area south of Bynum, offers some of the best hiking and canoeing found in North Carolina.  Besides being known for its steep slopes and rock outcrops, it is home to at least two endangered species, the Cape Fear shiner and Spetima's clubtail dragonfly.

History buffs will enjoy the architecture of historic buildings located in Siler City and Pittsboro which are on the National Register of Historic Places.  You'll also enjoy the drive down the scenic byway at Bear Creek, and the wildlife sanctuaries and preserves throughout the County.

Dining

A variety of appetites will be satisfied at the many locally-owned eateries in Chatham County which offer everything from fast food to casual meals to upscale dining.  The county is proud of its "from farm to fork" cuisines as well as its local beer and wine offerings.   Among the cuisines offered are Southern-style, Greek (with a local twist), and barbecue as well as Mexican, American traditional, Italian, Chinese, and vegetarian restaurants menus.

You can shop until you drop for treasures, gifts and collectibles, as well as for everyday necessities.  One shop in Chatham Downs boasts that they offer gifts of all varieties for all interests and personalities.  The Last Unicorn offers antiques and unusual architectural items, as well as hand-crafted items.
