| Pittsboro North Carolina Located in Chatham County, North Carolina, Pittsboro is a charming town and the Chatham County Seat with about 3,000 residents. Pittsboro was named for William Pitt, the son of the 1st Earl of Chatham, for whom the county had been named. Pittsboro was established in 1785 on land that belonged to Mile Scurlock. The Chatham County Court House was also located on this land. Two years later, however, the legislature declared that a town could not be established on private land. So, the trustees of the town purchased land adjacent to Scurlock which was owned by William Petty and laid out the town. Later that year the town was named as the County Seat. At one time, Pittsboro was considered as a possible site for the State Capitol and was also considered by the University of North Carolina. The University of North Carolina ultimately chose Chapel Hill and the state capitol was located in Raleigh, approximately 30 miles east of Pittsboro. Pittsboro, may be a small town, but it is big on the attractions it has to offer. Among the main attractions are the unique shopping experiences and fine dining experiences offered visitors. Shops like the French Connections have a variety of antiques and imports. Smaller shops like Vespertine and the Urban Sampler offer unique gifts. Nostalgia reigns in the General Store Cafe as it does in S & T Soda Shoppe and Virlie's Grill. If you're looking for some unusual things to do, First Sunday, which takes place the first Sunday of each month, is an event where retailers along Hillsboro Street open their doors for business from noon to 4. Holiday parades and other activities make the event even more fun. Live music is performed from April through November. In 1967, many years following a disastrous hurricane which struck the Cape Fear River Basin, the 46,768 acre Jordan Lake was constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. It was known then as New Hope Lake but a few years later, the name was changed to honor the former senator from North Carolina, B. Everett Jordan. The lake is not only a source of recreation, it also serves as the water supply for surrounding cities. Annually on the First Saturday in October, Jordan Lake holds a festival to celebrate the unique cultural and natural resources of the area, giving participants the opportunity to see and experience activities which are related to agricultural, industrial, and Native American history. The area has large, undisturbed areas which provide the perfect nesting place for the bald eagle. There is one area open from Memorial Day through Labor Day where visitors can enjoy interpretive programs about the eagle and view the birds in their natural habitat for a nominal fee. The town is served by four schools: Pittsboro Elementary, Horton Middle School, Northwood High School, and Chatham County Community College-Pittsboro Branch. Pittsboro Homes for Sale
