Bynum is an unincorporated community in Chatham County, NC, just 8 miles south of Chapel Hill, and 4 miles north of Pittsboro. Its close proximity to the Research Triangle makes it perfect for rural gentrification. The Bynum Front Porch Music Series performs at the General Store every Friday from April through November, rain or shine. Featured music includes gospel, folk, blues, rockabilly and bluegrass. Children enjoy arts and crafts, and story telling from 7:00 to 8:00 inside the store. Every second and fourth Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. there are bluegrass jam sessions (acoustic instruments only), and a potluck - bring your favorite dish! For outdoor activities, the Haw River provides canoeing, and the area around the river is perfect for hiking. After a hike, you can stop by the store, kick back, and enjoy a refreshingly cool drink and chat with the friendly folks of Bynum. The Old Bynum Bridge, which was build in 1923 and crosses the Haw River, is now closed to motor vehicle traffic, but is used as a bicycle route. Bynum homes for sale today include some of the cotton mill village homes. You'll also find new construction homes in this thriving small community. It was a cotton mill village, but has become an artist community and there are many young families attracted to the warm small town atmosphere within a reasonable commute to work. The town was once a bustling textile town and home to the Odell Manufacturing Company, owned by John Milton Odell, a cotton manufacturer from Concord, NC. In 1872 he built the mill on the Haw River, and by 1900 he developed a mill village on the hill overlooking the plant for the mill workers and their families. The town grew with the success of the mill. Eventually there were five stores, a movie theater, and a high school. It was considered, at that time, a self-contained community, with everything within walking distance. Today, the community's heartbeat can be found at the Bynum General Store. The store is now closed, but the building is being used as the gathering place for the community as well as a post office.
